Croydon is the largest London borough by population and it is split in half by its own geology. The north sits on the clays and gravelly sands of the Lambeth Group, low ground at the foot of the Norwood Hills. The south climbs onto the chalk of the North Downs. Between Thornton Heath and the ridge above Kenley there is roughly four hundred feet of height, and that difference shows up in the work.
Down at the Thornton Heath, Norbury and South Norwood end it is dense Victorian and Edwardian terraces. Slate front slopes, London stock brick, parapets, shared gutters and a back addition with its own small roof. The faults there are almost all about age and about the neighbours: nail fatigue letting slates go one at a time with no weather to explain it, a party gutter two doors down putting water into your wall, a chimney pointed in hard cement forty years ago that has been spalling ever since.
Up the hill in Sanderstead, Purley, Coulsdon and Kenley it is interwar semis and detached houses. Concrete tile, hipped roofs, deep eaves, generous overhangs. Those roofs are younger and generally sounder, but they are exposed. The Met Office long-term average at Kenley Airfield is around 847mm of rain across roughly 130 rain days a year, with about 35 nights of air frost - noticeably harder going than the low ground a few miles north. Up there the faults are about wind and frost: a verge lifted, a ridge line whose mortar bedding has finally given up, rain driven under a lap on the weather side.

Do I need planning permission to repair my roof?
For like-for-like repair, no, anywhere in the borough. It gets more complicated if you are changing the covering or the roof shape, and there are 21 conservation areas in Croydon. The strictest case is the Chatsworth Road conservation area in Addiscombe, where an Article 4 direction has required planning permission for all alterations to the roof of a dwelling house since January 2016. Do you only work on houses?
Mostly, but not exclusively. Flat roofs on small commercial units, shop parades and blocks of flats are all normal work. What we do not take on is large commercial contracts that would mean subcontracting the job out, because the whole point of how this operates is that the person who surveyed your roof is connected to the person who repairs it.
How soon can you come out?
